News and Editorials Survivor - Color War? Dumb Idea! August 2006 CBS just announced that it is considering a new Survivor series featuring teams "…divided along ethnic lines - black, white, Hispanic and Asian." This is their idea for including more minorities on TV. It's a monumentally stupid move! Survivor Host Jeff Probst was quoted as questioning the wisdom of this because of our still smoldering history of racial segregation. He's right! Some may dismiss this as just cultural silliness. They might see this as like "color war" in summer camp, or even the famous Riggs-King tennis match of 30 years ago, a truly forgettable symbolic battle of the sexes in the early days of the modern feminist movement. This is dead wrong. This country and world has suffered too often from real color wars - race, ethnicity, or religion related conflicts. Many in our society still bear the scars and face these ancient divisions daily. We have too much ethnic divisiveness as it is. If CBS wants to showcase diversity on TV - a good idea - they can simply hire or feature more people of more ethnicities in positive situations. But ethnically divided teams only appeal to our lowest stereotypes. Let's vote this obnoxious idea off the island - please. Bart A. Charlow |
