News and Editorials Oy, Molly, Molly.
Molly Ivins can be accused of pluck, rapier wit and wisdom (depending upon your politics), but certainly not of sensitivity. Her column, "Postwar Follies", about Bush's "chosen" administration of post-war Iraq is on the mark overall. She certainly lampoons these characters. I don't disagree with her premise: the whole crew is among the least acceptable viceroys to both Iraqis and the surrounding Arab neighborhood. However, her reason for dismissing Jay Garner as "pro-Israeli" allegedly "Zionist", while possibly true, is a little risky. Without careful framing it plays directly into the currently rampant anti-Semitic rumor that this war is a plot on behalf of a Jewish/Israeli conspiracy — a completely bogus idea that would be laughable if it weren't so outright dangerous! So, Molly, if you're only making a point that his prior association with Israeli causes makes him suspect to Arabs, you're certainly right. You can make your case that he's a poor choice for many obvious reasons. But if you don't watch your wording more carefully you will throw napalm on a fire that's already burning out of control. We don't need any more of that particular conflagration. Bart A. Charlow, President |
